It was a year filled to brim with epic lows socially, politically, and for me personally. I've never felt cursed, but near the end I began to wonder if 2016 wronged an old gypsy woman somewhere down the line and fucked us all for 365 days. Heavy metal was more important to me than ever this past year; it kept me grounded, solidified bonds, and helped me process the endless torrent of emotions I felt. So, it is with maniacal joy that I say "Fuck You 2016!" And with that, here are the 40 albums that saved my sanity.

10. SubRosa - For This We Fought the Battle of Ages

SubRosa occupies an interesting section of the doom underground. Sure they're heavy, but it's the attention to detail, storytelling, and instrumentation that set them apart from their contemporaries. 2016 saw SubRosa operating at a level most bands will never touch.

8. Spectral Apparition - Manifestation

For such a young band, Spectral Apparition delivered a monstrous EP this year. Manifestation is perfectly paced black death, and it hits all the right buttons for me.

This album was a pleasant surprise for me. It was released in October and became my go-to fall album. It's bleak, vicious, and absolutely gorgeous. This is what we talk about when we talk about black metal. Stunning.

5. Malokarpatan - Stridzie Dni

I fell in love with this album almost immediately. It's a sloppy pile of thrashy/proto black metal that seems amateur at first, but actually contains some of the most refreshing ideas I've heard in ages. Required listening.

4. Bölzer - Hero

I know a LOT of people were disappointed in the new Bölzer album, but I'm not one of them. Once I let go of the idea that this band would reclaim the glory of "Entranced By the Wolfshook" I discovered a nuanced, interesting, and amazingly well crafted album in Hero. Drop your pretension and just listen to the damn music.

3. Moonsorrow - Jumalten Aika

After 5 years without an album, I wasn't sure what to expect from the new Moonsorrow. I've been a fan for a long time, but I haven't been listening to much folk black metal recently so I didn't know how this would strike me. Well, it fucking rules. It rules so hard. Ferocious, fun, and expertly played. This confirms my suspicions that Moonsorrow are incapable of putting out a bad record.

2. Altarage - Nihl

When I heard Altarage's 2015 demo I was intrigued, but only slightly. The band showed a lot of promise, but I wasn't losing my mind over their brand of cavernous death metal. At the beginning of 2016 Altarage released Nihl and it blew my fucking mind. I don't know how they did it, but these Spaniards put out one of the best death metal albums I've heard in a long long time. Nihl is suffocating, bleak, burly, and full of rolling riffs that carry you from one track to the next. It's like drowning in a sea of distorted bass. Amazing.

1. Howls of Ebb - Cursus Impasse: The Pendlomic Vows

2016 saw a lot of great death metal releases, but no band can touch the creative majesty of Howls of Ebb's latest opus. This hulking mass of hyperactive filth represents everything death metal can be, without ignoring where it came from. The way Cursus Impasse moves from track to track is incredible, and provided one of the most satisfying full album listening experiences I've had in years. Essential.

I love everything about the new Spectral Apparition EP. From the plodding drums to the melodic guitars slightly buried in the mix, everything about this release strokes my metal sensibilities. You could call this black metal, blackened death metal, or even black doom. Whatever you decide to call Manifestation, it should be come after the word "great."
Jacob Buczarski (sole member of Mare Cognitum) is back after a 2 year break with a new full-length album and, spoiler alert, it fucking rules! I'll be the first to admit I'm a sucker for the type of cosmic black metal played by the likes of Mare Cognitum, Darkspace, Spectral Lore, and Pangaea; Science Fiction is the perfect fodder for black metal exploration in my mind. Everything I loved about Mare Cognitum's 2014 album Phobos Monolith is refined and enhanced on Luminiferous Aether. The guitar riffs are beautiful and melancholy, the blast beats grind and pulsate like twin ion cannons, and the solos sweep through the light-less void like shooting stars. If you have even the slightest interest in atmospheric black metal, this is your new bread and butter.

This album is incredible, and you need to hear it. Howls of Ebb have created an album that sounds like everything and nothing all at once. I've been listening to Cursus Impasse: The Pendlomic Vows since its release in May, and realized I had yet to write about it on the site. Any description I can give you of the music herein wouldn't do justice to the experience of listening to it, so please push play and bask in the merciless glory of one of the best albums I've heard in ages.

This edition of Know Your Patches highlights one of the most criminally underrated black metal albums of all time, Nagelfar's Virus West. Nagelfar was founded in Germany in 1993 by Zorn. After a few years of unstable lineup changes, splits and demos, the band finally released their first full length, Hünengrab im Herbst, in 1997. The main songwriting talent here lies in the combination of Zorn and Alexander von Meilenwald (the sole member of The Ruins of Beverast). Nagelfar's final album, 2001's Virus West, is damn near perfect. This is a testament to black metal in every way; grinding, intricate, varied, and beautiful. If you don't know this album, stop what you're doing and listen. Virus West is a true classic and sets the bar so high, few have reached it since.

When I read this band's name I was all geared up to hate everything about them...then I pushed play. Call it a guilty pleasure if you must, but this shit rips so fucking hard. It scratches my itch for riff-driven NWOBHM in a BIG way, and the vocals are the perfect mix of bravado and croon. Necromancing the Stone are a "super group," featuring Jeff Loomis (Nevermore), James Malone (Arsis), Bart Williams (The Black Dhalia Murder), and Jeramie Kling (Ribspreader), in addition to vocalist John Williams (not that one) and guitarist Justin Wood. So, yeah, their name is a pretty obvious and lame pun–but this album is super fun. Don't we deserve some fun?
Another in a long line of filth covered Finnish black metal, Anal Blasphemy is the unholy brainchild of Molester Kadotus. Based on the name and imagery you might expect Anal Blasphemy to play bestial black metal, but you'd be wrong. The music here is plodding and full of melody, placing it firmly in the melodic black metal oeuvre. Western Decadence, the fourth full length from AB, is out now via Iron Bonehead Productions.

I'll be honest, I hate the font Jassa use for their logo; so much that I avoided listening to this track for a few weeks. I finally gave in and was pleasantly surprised by the cacophonous and melodic black metal these Russians spit out. Give it a spin, ignore the shitty font, and get pumped for the full album coming later this year.
Vanhelgd play an interesting style of death metal. On one hand, it scratches the same itch as Swedish DM bands like Entombed, Unleashed, and Grave–but on the other hand, it churns and grinds in a far more complex way than the aforementioned traditionalists. There is a melodic quality to Vanhelgd keeping things grounded and moving forward, but those same melodic riffs tend to drone on and collapse in on themselves. The band's latest album Temple of Phobos, recently released via Dark Descent, is certainly worth spending some time with. I'm still on the fence about this one, but I'm leaning toward "great."
