Just released last week is the debut album by Finnish doom artists Cataleptic, entitled Strength Within. The album is an all together solid recording with musical qualities that range from depressive to triumphant. It's slow enough at times to appeal to funeral doom fans, but will quickly pick up the pace to galloping riffing.Interestingly, while most of the songs range in the 10 to 15 minute mark, their weakest song is Reckoning, which is the only song (other than the intro) to be under 10 minutes at just 5:40. Longer songs like Determination and Paradigm seem to be given more time to develop slowly, which makes them all the more satisfying at the apex of their crescendos. And when they take the time to do so, Cataleptic's ability to shift the mood so seamlessly is really where they shine, moving from despondent to epic and back again. This is a great end of the year release.
